Strategic Management with Traute Kaufmann

A strategy ensures that companies are successful in the long term. However, strategic management has not become any easier in the VUCA world and due to coronavirus. What this means for

management, says Traute Kaufmann in an interview with Andrea Amerland, editor for Management & Leadership at Springer Professional. Click on the

SGBS Podcast with Traute Kaufmann

My first podcast is out and I'm still struggling a bit with the fluid relaxation. It always takes a lot of practice to become a master. Nevertheless, it was fun.

In this podcast episode, I discuss two strategic management

tools with the head of the SGBS Center for Entrepreneurship and moderator Marcus Disselkamp: the substitution time curve and the scenario technique. Both techniques aim to channel and tame the high level of complexity in which managers have to make strategic decisions. This is because enormous forces are constantly acting on a company, such as constantly changing environmental spheres (trends) or stakeholders. Based on market data, the substitution time curve provides approximate saturation and substitution trends for products and technologies at an early stage. The scenario technique extends the arc further and at the same time starts earlier in the timeline. It develops paths that could lead from the present to various possible futures and identifies upcoming changes, disruptions and erosions as well as the uncertainties and opportunities they contain.

If you would like to make use of the expressive and creative power of these two tools, you will find both instruments presented in an understandable and implementation-oriented way - including an illustrative case study - in Volume 2 of my series on strategy tools from practice. Of course, the corresponding Excel-based tool can also be purchased on this website.
